Center consoles are the workhorses of the fishing world. They're versatile, capable, and endlessly customizable. Whether you run a 22-foot bay boat out of the ICW or a 36-foot offshore machine from Jacksonville's Mayport inlet, custom aluminum upgrades can improve how your boat fishes and functions. These are five of the most impactful upgrades we build at Custom Marine Fabrication.
Factory rod holders are fine for basic needs, but serious anglers quickly outgrow them. A custom aluminum rod holder array gives you the capacity to go from 4 factory holders to 8, 12, or more in a configuration that matches how you actually fish. You can optimize the angles too, since different fishing styles require different rod angles. Trolling, bottom fishing, and casting each benefit from specific holder positioning.
Spacing is another common complaint with factory setups. The holders are often too close together, causing tangled lines and difficult access. Custom spacing eliminates that. Overhead rod racks mounted to your T-top keep rods secure during transit while freeing up cockpit space.
We fabricate rod holder arrays from aluminum and weld standard vertical (0-degree) or angled (15- to 30-degree) rod holder tubes directly into the structure. Critical joints are TIG-welded for strength and a clean finish, with hardware selected for marine use rather than lightweight brackets that loosen over time.
The leaning post is the command center of a center console. A factory leaning post gets the job done, but a custom unit can integrate everything you need into one cohesive structure. Think built-in tackle drawers or compartments sized for your specific boxes, a recess sized for your preferred cooler so it sits flush and doesn't slide, vertical holders on the back side for quick access to your most-used rods, strategically placed grab rails for passenger safety during rough runs, and a flat rigging surface with knife slots, leader holders, and tool organizers.
Our custom leaning posts are fully welded aluminum structures. We design them to bolt into your existing mounting points, or we'll create new mounting hardware that integrates with your deck structure.
Modern marine electronics are expensive and need proper protection. A custom aluminum electronics box gives you a hinged, gasketed enclosure that shields screens from spray and sun when not in use. All wiring is routed internally, eliminating exposed cables and zip-tie clutter. The box is designed with drainage and airflow to prevent overheating and condensation, and it can accommodate two, three, or even four displays in a single integrated mounting plate.
We see a lot of boats in Jacksonville with thousands of dollars in electronics mounted with generic RAM mounts and exposed to the elements. A custom electronics box protects that investment and gives your console a clean, professional look.
Grab rails might seem simple, but they're one of the most important safety features on any boat. Custom aluminum grab rails can be placed where passengers naturally need support based on your boat's actual layout. Standard 1" or 1.25" tube provides a comfortable, secure grip. Rails can be designed to complement your T-top legs, console shape, and other aluminum work. They can also serve double duty by incorporating rod holder tubes, antenna mounts, or light brackets.
We commonly build grab rails for the forward console face, gunwale tops, and hardtop support structures. Every rail is TIG-welded and finished to match your other fabrication work.
For a major upgrade, a custom tower or hardtop can change both the appearance and functionality of your center console. A full hardtop with canvas enclosure capability provides all-weather comfort. A tower with a second station gives you a huge advantage for sight-fishing and navigating shallow water. Proper hardtop-mounted outrigger bases give you offshore trolling capability. Spreader lights, navigation lights, and accessory switches can also be planned during fabrication.
